New Delhi: Responding to the country's vaccination policy, the Centre told the Supreme Court that the entire population of India will be inoculated against the COVID by the end of this year.

The apex court also enquired about the functioning of the CoWin platform for vaccine registration and dual-pricing of vaccines.

A three-member beyear-endnch of Justices DY Chandrachud, LN Rao and S Ravindra Bhat asked the centre why it procured only 50 per cent of required vaccines for the 18-44 age groups.

"For entire population above 45, the centre is procuring (vaccines) but for 18-44 there is the bifurcation of procurement - 50 per cent available to states by manufacturers and price is fixed by the centre, and rest to be given to private hospitals. What is the (actual) basis for this?" the court asked.

The court also pointed out that requiring people to register on the CoWIN digital platform will hamper vaccination efforts in rural areas, where there is no interest access.

"Everyone has to register on CoWIN (but) the digital divide... Is it realistically possible to expect (people) from rural areas to register on COWIN?" the court enquired.
