Ex-Delhi BJP spokesperson detained for inflammatory slogans against Muslims

New Delhi: The Delhi police have detained five men in connection with the alleged inflammatory and anti-Muslim slogans during a protest held at Jantar Mantar against the colonial-era laws on Sunday.

Supreme Court lawyer and former Delhi BJP spokesperson Ashwini Upadhyay is one of the detained. A senior police officer named the other four Deepak Singh Hindu, Vineet Kranti, Preet Singh, and Vinod Sharma (head of SudarshanVahini). Legal documents work is underway to make the arrests, reported The Indian Express.

A protest against "colonial-era laws" led by Upadhyay rallied hundreds of people on Sunday. The video footage of the rally showed that people shouting anti-Muslim slogans threatening harm. The detained men were identified using the footage.

The event also reportedly lacked permission from the police.

The five men were detained in a late-night operation. Ashwini Upadhyay reached Connaught Place police station at around 3 am. Deepak Singh Hindu was detained from his house in Karawal Nagar at 12.40 am by a team stationed outside. He claims to be the president of an organisation called the Hindu Force.

The Delhi Police had registered a case against unknown persons under IPC sections 153-A promoting enmity between different groups) and 188 (disobedience to order duly promulgated by public servant). The organisers are also charged for violation of Covid guidelines under the DDMA Act.
