Fresh violence sees automatic weapons fired, vandalism, and arson in Manipur

Imphal: In a disturbing escalation of violence, multiple incidents of clashes, mob build-ups, and vandalism have shaken the conflict-torn state of Manipur. Last night, automatic weapons were fired from Kwakta in the Bishnupur district and Kangvai in the Churachandpur district, causing panic among the residents. The sporadic bursts of gunfire continued until early morning, according to local police and army sources.
Simultaneously, reports of mob gatherings and attempted acts of vandalism and arson have added to the chaos in the region. A mob of approximately 1,000 people congregated near the Palace Compound, close to Advance Hospital, where they made an attempt to set ablaze the historic site. The situation was brought under control after the Rapid Action Force (RAF) intervened, using tear gas and rubber bullets to disperse the crowd. Unfortunately, two civilians sustained injuries in the process.
Similar incidents were reported near Manipur University, where 200 to 300 people gathered and attempted to vandalize the residence of a local MLA. Prompt action by the RAF successfully dispersed the mob, averting further damage. Meanwhile, in the Imphal West district, a mob of 300 to 400 individuals made an unsuccessful attempt to ransack the Iringbam Police Station's armour. Once again, the RAF was deployed to restore order and prevent the situation from escalating.
Under the cover of darkness, violence also struck political targets, raising concerns about the worsening law and order situation in the state. The BJP office at Sinjemai was besieged by a mob of 200 to 300 people, leading to the deployment of an Army column to disperse the crowd. Similarly, the residence of the state BJP president, Adhikarimayum Sharda Devi, faced an attempted act of vandalism, but swift intervention from the Army and RAF prevented any significant damage.
These incidents come on the heels of a shocking attack on the home of Union Minister RK Ranjan Singh, which was set ablaze by a mob of 1,200 individuals who hurled petrol bombs. The violence between two communities in Manipur has intensified in recent days, with political leaders becoming prime targets for these acts of aggression.
