Furious flood claim 25 lives, hit over 31 lakh in Assam

Guwahati: After skies poured down for hours on end, more than 31 lakh people across 32 districts of Assam are facing the hardships of flood and devastation.
A total of 25 people have been killed in the flood on Saturday after 8 more lost to surging waters since the heavy rains started.
Eight people missing with four in Hojai district and an additional four in Bajali, Karbi Anglong West, Kokrajhar and Tamulpur, taking the overall casualties to 62, according to India Today.
Churning floodwaters of Brahmaputra and its tributaries flowed to 4,291 villages, submerging 66455.82 hectares of crop land.
The floods have damaged hundreds of houses, sweeping away roads, bridges and canals were overflowing.
India Today quoted a district administration official in Barpeta saying villagers were not willing to flee, leaving behind their valuables at their homes.
District authorities, according to the officials, arranging for relief camps, as well as offering food and essentials.
Rising water level in Bhutan poses threat to the district, according to the official, suggesting the situation could worsen the days to come.
More than 1.56 lakh are staying in 514 relief camps set up by authorities in 21 districts.
Many affected people came out to say their hardships including having nothing to eat after their houses got swept away in flood waters.
The Indian Army, paramilitary forces, National Disaster Response Force, State Disaster Response Force and the Fire & Emergency Services of the Assam police are at work in rescue operations.
Meanwhile, Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Saturday talked with Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma assuring him of all help from the Centre.
