Genome sequencing reveals severe dengue strain in most positive samples in Delhi

New Delhi: The genome sequencing of 20 dengue-positive samples conducted in Delhi has raised concerns as 19 out of the 20 samples were found to be of the severe strain type-2.
This revelation comes as the city grapples with a surge in dengue cases. The health minister Saurabh Bharadwaj shared this critical information during a meeting chaired by Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal to address the growing spread of dengue and other vector-borne diseases in the national capital.
To combat the escalating situation, the Delhi government has decided to take strict action against mosquito breeding. The fine for households where mosquito breeding is found has been raised to Rs 1,000, while commercial establishments will face a fine of Rs 5,000. This move is aimed at curbing the breeding of disease-carrying mosquitoes and controlling the transmission of dengue.
During the meeting, Chief Minister Kejriwal emphasised the need to prepare medical facilities to handle dengue cases effectively. He directed the health department to reserve beds for dengue patients and ensure the availability of essential medicines in hospitals and mohalla clinics.
A total of 187 dengue cases were reported in the city until July 22, making it the highest number of cases for this period since 2018, according to a report from the civic body. The rapid increase in cases has raised concerns among health authorities and prompted urgent measures to prevent further spread of the disease.
Dengue, a mosquito-borne viral infection, can lead to severe complications and even fatalities, especially when caused by the severe strain type-2. With the prevalence of this more dangerous strain in most of the samples, health authorities are focusing on implementing preventive measures and providing timely medical assistance to affected individuals.
