Meerut: Mahatma Gandhi's image must be replaced by the image of V D Savarkar, along with other freedom fighters, All India Hindu Mahasabha demanded on Sunday, reports PTI.

Hindu Mahasabha wrote an open letter to the Union government, further demanding that the road leading to the Parliament House must be renamed after Savarkar.

According to Mahasabha leaders, the Modi government could give a true tribute to Savarkar, a former president of the Hindu Mahasabha, by doing the above.

The Akhil Bharat Hindu Mahasabha observed Savarkar's 58th death anniversary on Sunday on Sharda Road by performing havan puja and rituals.

National Vice President of Hindu Mahasabha, Pandit Ashok Sharma, claimed that Savarkar was a great historical revolutionary in India's freedom struggle.

In October last year, the Akhil Bharat Hindu Mahasabha's demand on currency notes was Netaji Subhas Chandra Bose. They had demanded then that Gandhiji's photo on currency notes must be replaced by Nethaji's, Hindustan Times reported.

In a press conference in Kolkata, West Bengal working president of the Akhil Bharat Hindu Mahasabha Chandrachur Goswami said that they believe that Netaji's contribution to the country's freedom struggle was no less than that of Mahatma Gandhi. Having the "greatest" freedom fighter's (according to them, it's Netaji) photo on currency notes is the best way to honour him. Therefore Gandhiji's photo must be replaced with his, Mahasabha said.

It looks like the organisation raised a similar demand with a fresh leader in intervals, and they seem so desperate to remove Mahatma Gandhi's face from the notes or could it be the first step towards erasing Gandhi completely from history?
