New Delhi: Former student leader Kanhaiya Kumar, who joined Congress leaving CPI, said that the survival of Congress was the thought of many and through which most people wish to see democracy intact in the country.
He made this statement in a press conference held in Delhi after his joining the party. He said that the reason why he has chosen Congress to join was the party's stature in the country as being one of the oldest and most democratic.
Comparing Congress to a big ship, the one which saved the aspirations of many people, including Gandhi's oneness, Bhagat Singh's courage, and BR Ambedkar's idea of equality, will be protected in the country, Kanhaiya said.
He is of the opinion the Congress is the only idea that can take over an ideology that is now ruining the country's values, culture, history, and future, and it was also the belief of thousands of youngsters that the Congress could save the country from slipping to decadence.
Kanhaiya was earlier with the Communist Party of India (CPI) which he joined ahead of the 2019 general election. He then contested from his hometown Begusarai in Bihar against the BJP's Giriraj Singh of the BJP but failed to win.
At the event, Gujarat Dalit leader Jignesh Mevani, too, extended his support to the outfit, though he couldn't join the party formally due to technical reasons. As per reports, he has stopped short of doing that since being a member of the Gujarat Legislative Assembly on the party ticket of Rashtriya Dalit Adhikar Manch (RDAM), his taking a Congress membership may disqualify him for the house.
