Award-winning Indian photojournalist Danish Siddiqui killed in Kandahar clashes

Kabul: Indian photojournalist and Pulitzer Prize winner Danish Siddiqui was killed in action while covering clashes in the Spin Boldak district in Kandahar. He was reporting an assignment embedded with the Afghan Special Forces for Reuters.

The Reuters journalist was killed in Spin Boldak district of Kandahar city in Afghanistan on Friday.

Expressing grief on Danish Siddiqui's demise, Farid Mamundzay, Afghanistan's Ambassador to India, tweeted: "Deeply disturbed by the sad news of the killing of a friend, Danish Seddiqi in Kandahar last night. The Indian Journalist & winner of the Pulitzer Prize was embedded with Afghan security forces. I met him 2 weeks ago before his departure to Kabul. Condolences to his family & Reuters."

In a series of tweets posted three days ago, the photojournalist wrote a witness account on violence perpetrated by the Taliban in the border towns of Afghanistan and Pakistan.

Siddiqui had covered the Nepal earthquake in 2015, the Battle of Mosul in 2016-17, the 2018 Rohingya refugee crisis, the 2019–2020 protests in Hong Kong, the 2020 Delhi riots and the COVID-19 pandemic along with many other important news events.
