New Delhi: Jamaat-e-Islami Hind (JIH) has demanded a high-level inquiry into the Odisha train accident and offered condolences to the bereaved families.

In a media statement, JIH Vice-President Prof. Salim Engineer said, "We are deeply saddened to hear about the tragic train accident near Bahanaga Station in the Balasore district of Odisha." Offering his sincere condolences, and praying to the families of the victims, Prof. Salim shared the grief of those who lost their near and dear ones in the horrific tragedy. Wishing a speedy recovery to the injured, the JIH Vice-President appreciated the quick action and assistance the people of Odisha provided to victims.

Prof. Salim called it a matter of great concern that such a massive train accident occurred in which more than 260 people lost their lives and over 900 were seriously injured. According to media reports, a signalling failure led to the crashing of the Chennai-bound Coromandel Express, the Howrah-bound Bengaluru-Howrah Superfast Express, and a goods train.

Demanding a high-level inquiry, the JIH Vice President said that findings must be made public and that those found guilty should be punished. Asking the government to take steps to ensure such accidents are never repeated, Prof. Salim also demanded compensation for affected families.
