Karnataka Congress MLA N A Haris tops performance list in Assembly: ADR report

Bengaluru: N A Haris, the Congress MLA for Shanti Nagar in Bengaluru, asked 591 questions and recorded 84 percent attendance to become the top performing lawmaker in the state assembly from 2018 to 2023, says a report.

The Association for Democratic Reforms (ADR) said in its report on Wednesday said that leader of the Opposition Siddaramaiah, who ranked 236 in the list, asked ‘zero’ questions and had just 30 percent of the 150 sittings.

D K Shivakumar, Karnataka Pradesh Congress Committee president, had 39 per cent attendance but asked only 24 questions.

Chief Minister Basavaraj Bommai had only 24 per cent attendance, while raising 70 questions in the assembly.

ADR and Karnataka Election Watch (KEW) collected the details on the performance of lawmakers through filing a RTIs to the Karnataka Assembly Secretariat.

Attending all sessions of the assembly, JD(S) MLA K S Lingesh and BJP MLA Channappa Mallappa Nimbannavar topped the attendance list for the period.

JD(S) lawamakers topped the attendance category recording 107 days, followed by BJP with 99 days and the Congress at 95, and Independents recorded 93 days of attendance.

Of the 214 bills tabled in the Assembly, 202 (94 per cent) were passed, report showed.

On average a lawmaker asked 116 questions in the Assembly and attendance averaged 99 out of 150 sittings.

The report comes just a few weeks ahead of the Assembly polls on May 10 that shows a pitched fight between the ruling BJP and Opposition Congress.
