Bengaluru: Karnataka Chief Minister Siddaramaiah on Monday approved the formation of a fact-check unit to curb fake news and cybercrimes, The News Minute reported.

This decision stems from the increasing concern in the state over the spread of misinformation, and risks linked to cybercrimes.

The unit involving experts will use smart technology to figure out fake news and track down their sources, TNM added.

It is unclear if the mandate of the unit will envelop misinformation and disinformation happening on both mainstream and social media.

Meanwhile, the Central government’s similar plan for a fact-checking unit faced criticism over the concerns of stifling criticism.

It is not yet known if the Karnataka government will target only reports on the government.

Karnataka's IT-BT Minister, Priyank Kharge highlighted the need for a dedicated fact-check unit.

Kharge pointed out the emergence of “deep fake" technology becoming a ‘potential tool’ for misinformation campaign.

State Home Minister G Parameshwara also emphasized on the need for setting up the fact-checking unit without waiting.

Parameshwara added that it is vital to identify and correct false information to ensure law and order as misinformation could have ‘far-reaching consequence’.

It was back in June Karnataka initially put forward the idea for fact-checking unit in the state.

Monday’s meeting is believed to have discussed plans for implementing the unit.
