Representational.

Bengaluru: The education department in Karnataka was directed by the state government to submit a report on the activities of madrasas there. However, the direction has incited controversy, IANS reported.

Sources said that the education department has started working on the order while Hindu organisations in the state are demanding a ban on madrasas.

There are allegations that "suspicious" activities are being held in Muslim religious institutions.

As per the new order, the education department has to submit a report on 960 madrasas in the state. A committee, headed by the Commissioner of the education department, has been formed to give a comprehensive report on the activities of the madrasas.

Sources from BJP informed that the report by the education department would be decided whether to ban madrasas or should be brought under the purview of the education department. The BJP government in the state is thinking about taking actions on madrasas as same as what the Uttar Pradesh government had done on such institutions, sources said.
