The young man who allegedly attempted suicide in front of the Supreme Court succumbed to his injuries on Saturday morning. The 27-year-old, along with a 24-year-old woman, set themselves on fire on Monday. While the man sustained 65 per cent burn injuries, the woman suffered 85 per cent burns. Both were admitted to Delhi's Ram Manohar Lohia hospital.

The woman is from Uttar Pradesh's Ghazipur and was allegedly raped by BSP MP Atul Rai in 2019. She is still under treatment, the police informed. The MP has been in judicial custody in the case for the last two years.

The duo recorded a Facebook live video before attempting suicide. The woman claimed that she had filed the case in 2019 and that some senior police officers and others were supporting the accused. She also claimed that a non-bailable warrant was issued against her by a local court in UP and that she was summoned by a judge. The woman had also filed a plea in the SC in March requesting a transfer of her case from Allahabad to Delhi for a fair trial. She stated that there was a threat to her life. In August, the accused MP's brother accused her of forgery, and a local court in Varanasi issued a non-bailable warrant.

Deputy Commissioner of Police (New Delhi) Deepak Yadav informed that an inquiry is being conducted to pinpoint the exact reason for the attempt. It is suspected that the woman attempted to kill herself for fear of being framed in fraud cases by the accused, he added.
