Imphal: The Manipur government has introduced a comprehensive housing scheme aimed at providing permanent shelter for families displaced during the ethnic violence that erupted in the state on May 3.

Officials estimated that between 4800 to 5000 houses have been destroyed in both valley and hilly areas of Manipur since the outbreak of violence.

This scheme specifically targets families who lost their residences during the clashes between the non-tribal Meitei and tribal Kuki-Zomi communities.

It offers financial assistance based on the type of housing structure affected by the violence. Families who lost Pucca (concrete) houses will receive Rs 10 lakh, while those with Semi-Pucca houses will get Rs 7 lakh, and Kutcha houses (made of mud and straw) will be eligible for Rs 5 lakh, according to government sources.

Moreover, families with partially damaged or burnt houses will receive 50% of the allocated package amount or the actual repair cost, whichever is lower, to aid in the rehabilitation process.

Chief Minister N Biren Singh has confirmed the initiation of prefabricated housing construction to temporarily accommodate displaced individuals, with an estimated cost of Rs 149 crore. Singh also assured the construction of permanent houses at the original sites for those affected by the violence in the state.

In the recent past, approximately 3000 families were relocated from relief camps to newly constructed prefabricated houses, signifying a step forward in providing immediate shelter to the displaced population.

This housing scheme comes as part of the government's concerted efforts to aid families affected by ethnic violence, aiming to offer both immediate relief and long-term solutions for housing and rehabilitation.
