New Delhi: The Indian National Congress of Friday took a jibe on the National Democratic Alliance (NDA) government led by the Bharatiya Janata Party.

Referring to the fall of India on the Democracy Index's global ranking, the official twitter handle of the Congress party tweeted:

India slipped two places to 53rd position in the 2020 Democracy Index's global ranking, according to The Economist Intelligence Unit, which said the "democratic backsliding" by authorities and "crackdowns" on civil liberties has led to a decline in the country's ranking.

It also said that the Modi government has "introduced a religious element to the conceptualization of India citizenship, a step that many critics see as undermining the secular basis of the Indian state">

India was ranked 27th in the 2014 Democratic Index.
