Mohammed Faizal gets back his Lok Sabha membership before SC takes up his plea

New Delhi: P. P. Mohammed Faizal, an MP from Lakshadweep, who had been disqualified from the Lok Sabha after being convicted of attempted murder, has regained his membership ahead of a Supreme Court hearing of his plea challenging the disqualification.

The Lok Sabha secretariat reinstated the Lok Sabha membership of the NCP leader, which had been cancelled on January 13, 2023, after a lower court found him guilty of attempted murder along with three others and sentenced him to ten years imprisonment, as well as a fine of Rs 1 lakh.

However, upon Faizal's plea, the Kerala High Court suspended the conviction pronounced by a sessions court in Kavaratti. Although the Kerala High Court had ruled in Faizal's favour and suspended his conviction, his Lok Sabha membership was still not restored even after two months. As a result, the MP approached the Supreme Court for further assistance.

The MP claimed that his disqualification from the Lok Sabha was unlawful as the Lok Sabha Secretariat had failed to withdraw the disqualification notice.
