Kolkata: BJP leader as well as Leader of the Opposition in West Bengal, Suvendu Adhikari, said that all the places named after the Mughals must be identified and renamed, Asian News International reported.

It was on Saturday, the Centre announced the renaming of the 'Mughal Gardens' in the Rashtrapati Bhavan to 'Amrit Udyan'.

Adhikari told ANI that the Mughals had killed so many Hindus and destroyed temples. They named all the places here after them, and therefore, these places must be identified and renamed. BJP will remove all British and Mughal names within a week if BJP comes to power in Bengal, he said.

Meanwhile, Union Rural Development Minister Giriraj Singh welcomed the Centre's move renaming the gardens.

On Saturday, the Union government renamed the Mughal Gardens in Rashtrapati Bhavan to 'Amrit Udyan". The government claimed that the renaming is on the basis of the theme 'Amrit Mahotsav', which marked 75 years of Independence in India.

President Droupadi Murmu's deputy press secretary, Navika Gupta, was quoted by the ANI, "On the occasion of the celebrations of 75 years of Independence as 'Azadi ka Amrit Mahotsav', the President of India has given a common name to the Rashtrapati Bhavan gardens as 'Amrit Udyan'."

The Mughal Garden houses Rectangular, Long and Circular Gardens, the Herbal Garden, Musical Garden and the Spiritual Garden. It will be open to the public from January 31 to March 26. Opening the gardens for the public from February to March, when the flowers bloom, is an annual routine.
