Muharram procession in Srinagar permitted after 30 years in a historic decision

Srinagar: The Jammu and Kashmir administration has made a significant decision to allow a Muharram procession from Gurubazaar to Dalgate in Srinagar after a hiatus of over three decades. The Divisional Commissioner of Kashmir, V K Bhiduri, announced the approval on Wednesday, hailing it as a historic step that fulfills a long-standing demand of the Shia community.
Bhiduri stated, "There was a long-pending demand from our Shia brothers that the traditional procession on Muharram from Gurubazaar to Dalgate be allowed. It was not allowed for the past 32-33 years. Now the administration has decided to allow the procession. It is a historic step."
The decision was influenced by the peaceful and conducive environment created by the people of Kashmir. Bhiduri praised the efforts of the local residents, stating that their cooperation and support enabled the administration to take this momentous step.
"I want to congratulate the Shia brethren and other people of Kashmir. They have created an atmosphere that made it easy for the administration to take this decision," Bhiduri added.
To ensure the smooth and safe conduct of the procession, the administration has taken necessary precautions and arrangements. Ambulances will be on standby, and water will be made available along the procession route. Additionally, buses will be stationed at Dalgate to facilitate mourners.
"We have restricted the timing of the procession from 6.00 am to 8.00 am so that others are also not inconvenienced," Bhiduri added, considering the working day schedule.
Highlighting the importance of maintaining peace and order during the event, Bhiduri warned that anyone attempting to disrupt the procession would face strict actions.
The Divisional Commissioner expressed hope that the event would culminate peacefully, paving the way for the administration to consider similar decisions on other issues.
The Muharram procession, a significant religious event for the Shia community, holds deep cultural and historical significance. With the administration's nod, the devotees can now observe the traditional procession, marking an emotional and spiritual moment for the community after a long wait.
