Jorhat: Prime Minister Narendra Modi inaugurated a monumental 125-foot bronze statue of the legendary Ahom general, Lachit Borphukan, in Assam's Jorhat.

The awe-inspiring 'Statue of Valour' is now a part of the Lachit Barphukan Maidam Development Project located at Hollongapar near Teok.

Dressed in traditional attire and headgear, PM Modi, who arrived in Jorhat from Arunachal Pradesh by helicopter, actively participated in an Ahom ritual that marked the unveiling of the statue. Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma accompanied the Prime Minister during the program.

Designed by the renowned sculptor Ram Vanji Sutar, the statue stands at an impressive height of 125 feet, with the actual figure measuring 84 feet and the pedestal adding an additional 41 feet. The foundation for this grand statue was laid by former President Ram Nath Kovind in February 2022.

Lachit Borphukan, the celebrated military commander of the Ahom kingdom (1228-1826), is eternally remembered for his exceptional leadership during the 1671 'Battle of Saraighat.' In this historic battle, he successfully repelled the persistent attempts by the formidable Mughal forces, led by Raja Ramsingh-I, to reclaim Assam.

This unveiling ceremony marks a significant moment in recognizing and honoring the historical valor of Lachit Borphukan, reinforcing the deep-rooted history and culture of the region.
