Balasore: A Nigerian man who duped a UK woman and extorted Rs 30 lakh from a man was arrested by the cyber wing of the Balasore district police in Odisha. The man was defrauded through a honeytrap, PTI reported.

Balasore Cyber Police Station's inspector-in-charge, Mina Bindhani, said that the accused resided in the Kishangarh area in Delhi and duped people through fake social media accounts, which were in the names of foreign women.

The official said they had seized a mobile phone, a laptop and several SIM cards from the Nigerian.

An investigation was started after the defrauded man filed a complaint in January this year, the officer said.

"The man alleged that he came in contact with a woman from the UK through social media and then exchanged messages.

"The lady had sent a huge amount of gifts, including gold biscuits, a precious watch and a cellphone. When the gifts reached Delhi airport, a person, who identified himself as a customs officer, asked him to give a duty to receive the gifts. Accordingly, he paid ₹ 30 lakh in instalments but did not receive the gifts," the police officer quoted in the complaint.

The investigation into the matter revealed that the Nigerian duped the man of ₹ 30 lakh through fake social media. Police have seized the Nigeran man's bank account in which the money was deposited by the man.

He would be produced before the court of SDJM, Balasore. Further investigation is underway, the officer added.
