Prez not invited to new Parliament inauguration as she is ‘widow, tribal’: Udhayanidhi Stalin

Chennai: In a fresh attack on the BJP, Tamil Nadu’s Minister of Sports and Youth Affairs Udhayanidhi Stalin said that President Droupadi Murmu was not invited to the new Parliament building’s inauguration because “she is a widow and belongs to the tribal community” and questioned if this was “Sanatan Dharma”.

Udhayanishi Stalin, who is also the son of Chief Minister MK Stalin, was addressing an event in Madurai, where he said that the BJP got adheenams (mutt priests) from Tamil Nadu for the inauguration of the new Parliament building but left out the President.

“The new Parliament building was inaugurated. They (BJP) got the Adheenams from Tamil Nadu for the inauguration, but the President of India was not invited because she is a widow and is from a tribal community. Is this Sanatan Dharma?" said Udhayanidhi Stalin at the event.

In May, as many as 21 Adheenams were invited from Chennai to participate in the inauguration ceremony of the new Parliament building.

The DMK leader, who is the centre of the Sanatana Dharma controversy, said the party will continue to raise its voice against it.

Udhayanidhi had earlier slammed the PM Modi-led BJP government at the Centre for not involving President Murmu in the inauguration event calling it an example of “caste discrimination”.

Udhayanidhi pointed out that even when the women's reservation bill was introduced in Parliament, Hindi actresses were invited, while the President was not, due to her personal circumstances.

He claimed that these incidents were indicative of the impact of 'Sanatana Dharma' on such decisions.

Udhayanidhi had during an event earlier this month, said that Sanatana Dharma should not merely be opposed but eradicated. He also compared the Hindutva concept with diseases like dengue and malaria.

His comments sparked a severe backlash from political parties, with BJP insisting on the Congress to condemn his remarks.

However, Udhayanidhi has maintained firm on his stance saying his comments were about fighting an ideology.
