Punjab man thrashed to death for allegedly tearing holy book at a Gurdwara

Chandigarh: A 19-year-old man was thrashed to death in Punjab's Ferozepur on Saturday after he allegedly tore some papers of the holy book of the Sikhs at a gurdwara here, NDTV.
Bakshish Singh allegedly committed the sacrilege at Gurdwara Baba Bir Singh in Bandala village by tearing page of the Guru Granth Sahib.
Following the incident an angry mob caught hold of the man and thrashed him, Deputy Superintendent of Police (DSP) Sukhwinder Singh said.
Bakshish Singh’s father Lakhwinder Singh asked the police to register case against those who killed his son, who he said was mentally challenged and had been on medication for two years.
The locals reportedly said that Bakshish had never visited the gurdwara before and a police case has been filed against the man for the alleged sacrilege.
It is reported that the man after the act tried to run away but was caught by the locals, before he was beaten up.
Footage showed him sitting surrounded by a group of men with his hands tied and was bleeding.
The police later took him to a private hospital, but he had died by then.
Giani Raghbir Singh, the Jathedar of the Akal Takht which is the highest temporal seat of Sikhs, termed the man’s death a reaction to the failure of punishing culprits of sacrilege incidents.
The Jathedar of the Akal Takht called for socially and religiously boycotting the man’s family alongside not allowing his last rites at any gurdwara. The situation is now under control, said DSP Singh.
