New Delhi: The G20 foreign ministers’ meet underway in Delhi is gaining importance against the backdrop of Russia-Ukraine war.

Antony Blinken of USA, Sergey Lavrov of Russia, Qin Gang of China, are among the top international leaders arrived in the national capital to attend the meet.

Ukraine war is more likely to be in the spotlight as the block led by USA on one side is targeting Russia and China.

A report today said that the US is considering sanctioning China if it offers support to Russia in the war.

The grouping’s summits last month in Bengaluru under India’s presidency saw Ukraine war overshadowing the agenda.

The meeting, however, reached agreement on economic issues such as supporting Turkey and Syria reeling from Earth quake, climate finance, sustainable finance, debt relief, safety nets, among others.

Despite these agreements, the grouping was unable to issue a communique that would have made a lot of difference.

This is Qin Gang’s first visit to India after taking charge as foreign minister of China. Gang is likely to hold talks with EAM Jaishankar by the afternoon.

Meanwhile, Hong Kong newspaper ‘ South China Morning’, called Gang’s India visit as a ‘ reformist step into Indio-China relations.

“We are neighbours and both are emerging economies. Strong relations between China and India will serve the interests of both countries and their people,” reportedly said Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesperson Mao Ning.

Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov is likely to hold a bilateral meeting with External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar.
