New Delhi: Prime Minister Narendra Modi said it is important to promote indigenous products and self-reliance for India to become a developed country. He was speaking in reference to "Azadi ka Amrit Kaal", the period till 2047.

He added that one can keep the art, culture, and civilisation of India alive by choosing self-reliance. He spoke of the "swadeshi" philosophy while addressing a gathering to mark the 150th birth anniversary of Jain saint Vijay Vallabh Surishwar via video conference. A commemorative postage stamp and coin dedicated to the saint were also released.

PM Modi paid tribute to the saint and said the world is looking for inspiration to break out of the vicious circle of war, terror, and violence. "Ancient traditions and philosophy coupled with the power of today's India are turning out to be a big hope. The path shown by Surishwar and the teachings of Jain gurus is the solution to these global crises. Mahatma Gandhi had also adopted the path of 'aparigraha' as laid down by Jain gurus."

He also spoke of Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel and noted his birth anniversary will be celebrated on October 31. He added the Statue of Peace dedicated to the Jain monk is one of the largest ones in the country. He further said the 'Statue of Unity' is the tallest statue in the world. "These are not just tall statues, but they are also the greatest symbol of 'Ek Bharat, Shreshtha Bharat."

He noted that the Jain saint travelled to various parts of India and strengthened the unity, integrity, and culture of the country. The monk also wore khadi and urged his followers to promote made-in-India products.
