Seniority does not guarantee ticket for polls: Rahul Gandhi

Dahod (Gujarat): Sending a clear message to ambitious leaders in his party, Rahul Gandhi said on Tuesday that seniority would not guarantee ticket to contest elections.

He was addressing the party's tribal leaders in Dahod in Gujarat when he revealed the party's poll strategy.

Only those who work for and fight for people are guaranteed Congress party tickets to contest elections, he reportedly said.

The former president of the Congress asked tribal leaders of his party to fight for the tribals focusing on their issues related to forest, land and water.

He urged rank and file of the party as well as the senior leaders to reach out to tribals in a door-to-door-campaign.

Giving a morale booster he said only sincere workers would get ticket rather than pitching on seniority—"no work no ticket", IANS reported him as saying.

Attacking Modi administration, he said under Modi's leadership the BJP ruined the country's economy. The small and medium scale industries — the spine of Indian economy by generating crores of jobs—have suffered a lot, he said.

Without these industries Modi government cannot ensure employment in Gujarat or the nation, claimed the Congress leader.

Without giving the name of the Statue of Unity, which is touted as the world's largest located in Gujarat, Rahul said PM Modi raised some symbols at the cost of adivasis. These symbols he said ruined local tribal lives.

He urged the Congress leaders to take up the river interlinking project tribals are fighting.

Rahul said the Congress would have better chance to win polls in the state this time unlike in 2017.

He asked leaders to start fight with confidence and faith in themselves that they could do it.
