After a vehicle carrying 26 soldiers skidded off the road and fell into a gorge near Shyok river in Ladakh, seven were reported dead.

The accident took place around 9 am. The army carried out a rescue operation quickly and moved the soldiers to a field hospital in Partapur.

The party was moving from the Transit Camp in Partapur to a forward location in Sub Sector Hanif. Around 25 km from Thoise, the vehicle fell into a depth of approximately 50-60 ft. Everyone inside was injured, said an Army official.

Some of the soldiers have suffered critical injuries. Officials said efforts to secure the best medical help are underway. The Air Force has been requested to move those with serious injuries to Western Command.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi tweeted his condolences to the families of the seven soldiers who died in the accident. He wrote he is anguished by the bus accident in Ladakh. "My thoughts are with the bereaved families. I hope those injured recover at the earliest. All possible assistance is being given to the affected".
