Mumbai: Nationalist Congress Party (NCP) chief Sharad Pawar said that the Indian government should prioritise the introduction of reservation for women in the Lok Sabha and state Legislative Assemblies before proceeding with the implementation of the Uniform Civil Code.

He also highlighted Prime Minister Narendra Modi's restlessness following a recent meeting of opposition parties in Patna, stating that the next meeting is scheduled to take place in Bengaluru on July 13-14.

Regarding the Uniform Civil Code (UCC) debate, Pawar mentioned that the NCP will clarify its stance after carefully assessing the suggestions and demands put forth by various communities. However, he emphasised that it is essential to first address the long-pending demand for the reservation of women in Assemblies and the Lok Sabha.

Responding to Maharashtra Deputy Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis's claims about his alleged knowledge of the BJP's plans to form a government in Maharashtra with the support of a group of NCP MLAs led by Ajit Pawar in 2019, the NCP chief urged Fadnavis to focus on women's security in the state rather than making such statements.
