Shashi Tharoor speaks on partys support for Palestinian rights

New Delhi: Shashi Tharoor, a Congress MP from Thiruvananthapuram, stated on Wednesday that his party's declaration in favour of "Palestinian rights" during the Israel-Hamas conflict was by no means a comprehensive view of the issue.

“It is by no means a sort of comprehensive view of the issue, " Tharoor said, India Today reported.

Elaborating on his stance, Tharoor said, “I understand that the BJP has been making a political point. It is an evolving picture, and our, reactions will also evolve. There's already a much more detailed statement in itself.”

“The Congress Working Committee meeting was focused principally on domestic issues and focused overwhelmingly on the question of a socio-economic and caste census. And that issue dominated everything. If you remember Rahul Gandhi's press conference after the CWC meeting, he only mentioned that. He didn't even mention this issue. It somehow came to a resolution in a very brief form,” he said.

On Monday, the Congress Working Committee called for an "immediate cease-fire" between the Israeli forces and the Hamas militant group and said it has long-standing support "for the rights of the Palestinian people to land, self-government and to live with dignity and respect".

"The CWC calls for an immediate cease-fire and for negotiations to begin on all outstanding issues including the imperative issues that have given rise to the present conflict," it said in a statement.
