Sheikh Hasina thanks PM Modi for evacuating Bangladeshis from Ukraine

New Delhi: While India's successful evacuation drive in Ukraine surprised many bigwig nations, Bangladesh heartily thanked PM Modi— and there's a reason.

Marshaling its aircrafts to the long-haul evacuation India has brought home nearly all those trapped in the nation.

Indian nationals apart, India safely evacuated hordes of Bangladeshi citizens and PM Sheikh Hasina expressed gratitude to Narendra Modi for the help on Tuesday, reports say.

After Russia offered a leeway of ceasefire from 10 am Tuesday, India evacuated its stranded citizens from Sumy to Poltava.

Following ceasefire, human corridor was opened in the cities including Kyiv, Chernihiv, Sumy, Kharkiv and Mariupol.

According to Puneet Singh Chandhok, president of the Indian World Forum, an Indian convoy consisting of 12 buses left from Sumy and all Indians from the city have been evacuated. The Indian convoy was escorted by officials of the Indian Embassy and the Red Cross, India Today reported.

Alongside bringing home Indians, the convoy took onboard nine Bangladeshis, as well as Nepali and Tunisian students.

"I checked with the control room, 694 Indian students remain stranded in Sumy. Today, they have all left in buses for Poltava," Union Minister Hardeep Singh Puri said.
