Chitrakoot: A speeding pick-up vehicle rammed into a group of people, taking six lives and seriously injuring two, in Uttar Pradesh's Chitrakoot on Saturday. The vehicle loaded with tomatoes ran over the eight around 6:30 in the morning, PTI reported citing Chitrakoot Additional Superintendent of Police Shailendra Rai.

Five of the six, identified as Naresh (35), Arvind (21), Ramswaroop (25), Chhakka (32) and Somdutt (25), died on the spot and the last person Bhanupratap (32), succumbed to his injuries at the hospital. Meanwhile, Bhagwandas (45) and Ramnarayan (50) are in serious condition, the police informed.

The vehicle driver has been arrested, according to the police.

The Uttar Pradesh government released a statement conveying Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath's condolences towards the kith and kins of those who lost lives in the accident. Adityanath announced ₹ 2 Lakh as aid to the family of those who were killed and ₹ 50,000 to the injured. His office informed that directions had been issued to take strict action against the driver of the vehicle.

Police further said that all the victims were residents of Jari village in Banda district and were at Rauli Kalyanpur village to attend a marriage function.

Financial assistance of ₹ 2 lakh each has been announced for the family of the family, while ₹ 50,000 has been announced for those injured in the accident, District Magistrate Subhrant Shukla informed.
