Tamil Nadu state BJP President L Murugan on Wednesday swore in as a Union Minister of State. The 44-year-old noted lawyer at the Madras High Court has been a central government standing counsel since the ascent of the BJP government. Murugan is the second Tamil Nadu leader to be a part of Modi's cabinet after Pon Radhakrishnan who served as Minister of State for Shipping during the first tenure of the BJP government.

Since March 2020, Murugan was serving as state president of the BJP. An ABVP leader in his student days, Murugan later also served as the Vice-Chairman of the National Commission for Scheduled Castes and Scheduled Tribes from 2017 to 2020. However, he was defeated in the recent Assembly elections by DMK's N Kayalvizhi by 812 votes in Dharapuram constituency.
