Telangana medical student who attempted suicide over ‘ragging’ dies

Hyderabad: A medical student in Hyderabad died on Sunday night four days after having ‘self-administered injections’.
26-year-old D Preethi, who is a first year postgraduate at Kakatiya Medical College, allegedly committed suicide after she was harassed by her senior, police said.
After working nightshift at MGM Hospital she was found unconscious and was shifted to Hyderabad as her condition worsened, NDTV reported.
"She was last seen at the emergency OP while she was on duty and later, she left her room informing other doctors that she was experiencing a headache and stomach ache. She was later found in an unconscious state," Warangal police commissioner AV Ranganath reportedly said.
A second-year post-graduate student identified as Mohammed Ali Saif was arrested on charges of ragging and abetment to suicide.
He faces charges under the Scheduled Castes and the Scheduled Tribes (Prevention of Atrocities) Act and Anti-Ragging Act, according to report.
The police commissioner reportedly said the WhatsApp chats between them suggested ragging, adding that further probe will start after receiving toxicology report.
The student's father Narender said no action was taken against the senior student despite complained to the college and hospital authorities.
The victim's family refused to move her body from NIMS, Hyderabad for post-mortem and afterwards to her village for last rites.
The National Human Rights Commission and National Commission for SC / ST issued notices to the government, superintendent of MGM Hospital, principal and head of department of anaesthesiology where Preethi was studying.
