Ahmedabad: The Congress has found itself in soup after a curious remark by one of its candidates for Gujarat polls played into the hands of the BJP.

Chandan Thakor may not have thought what would be in store for the party when he said only Muslim could save the Congress.

The Congress Candidates for Gujarat's Siddhpur invited scathing attack from the BJP when he said on Saturday that BJP government stopped Triple Talaq and Hajj Subsidy.

Chandan Thakor said only Muslim could save the country and the Congress party, citing as an example he referred to the protests of Rahul Gandhi and Priyanaka Gandhi against NRC.

He said no other party stood for Muslims and the Congress is the only party protecting Muslims across the nation, he said.

Going at the BJP further, he accused the ruling party of a barrage of attacks against the Muslim including bringing a law to ban triple talaq, stopping Hajj subsidies that the Congress had initiated, and he promised the Muslims that the Congress would protest them.

BJP national spokesperson Shehzad Poonawalla tweeted to call the statement a "blatant Muslim appeasement"

He doubled down on the Congress citing former prime minister Manmohan Singh as having once said that the first right to resources belonged to Muslims.

Gujarat is going to polls in the early December where the ruling BJP is attempting to continue in power while Aam Aadmi Party has started causing headache.

In the midst of these two parties the congress with a long tradition in state politics is increasingly finding itself sidelined.
