As Trinamool Congress chief Mamata Banerjee has reached Delhi, three prominent politicians from diverse political backgrounds joined Trinamool Congress including one Congressman, one former Congress and a JDU leader. Former parliamentarians Kirti Azad, Ashok Tanwar and Pawan Varma are the three who joined TMC on Tuesday in the presence of party chief and West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee.

Pavan Varma a former advisor to Bihar Chief Minister Nitish Kumar and JDU general secretary was expelled from the ruling JD(U) in 2020. He was an MP until July 2016 and the spokesperson of the party. Varma has also been a former diplomat and spokesperson for the Ministry of External Affairs (MEA).

"Looking at the current political circumstances and the potential in Mamata Banerjee, I have today joined TMC," Pavan Varma said.

Azad, a former cricketer and a former BJP MP who switched to Congress was feeling sidelined in the party and so decided to quit. He fought the Lok Sabha polls on a Congress ticket in 2019, but could not win. Azad's wife is also active in Delhi politics

"I'll work under the leadership of Mamata Banerjee and I'll start working on the field. The BJP's politics is divisive and we will fight it. Today, a personality like her is needed in the country who can show it the right direction," Azad said after joining.

After inducting Tanwar into the TMC, Banerjee said that he will go to Kolkata and Goa and she will visit Haryana and work will begin in the state immediately.

"The TMC family is complete. Ashok Tanwar is not alone. I have told him to begin work and he will visit both Kolkata and Goa. He will go to Haryana and travel the state. We have to all work together and even I want to go to Haryana," she said.

"I'm thankful to you all for supporting me in this fight to defeat the BJP. For this, I say thank you, namaste, namashkar, Sat Sri Akal, salam walekum, dhanyawaad, Ram Ram... Jai Hindustan, Jai Haryana, Jai Bangla, Jai Goa will be a slogan with the name of each state. With Jai Bharat, there will be names of states. Without the development of states, the Centre cannot develop," Banerjee said.

Banerjee, who is in Delhi, always meets Congress president Sonia Gandhi during her visits. However, TMC sources indicated that the West Bengal chief minister may give it a miss this time.

A member of the 1983 cricket World Cup-winning squad, Azad was suspended from the BJP for openly targeting the then Union finance minister Arun Jaitley over alleged irregularities and corruption in the Delhi and District Cricket Association in December 2015. He joined Congress in 2018.

Azad was elected to the Lok Sabha thrice from Darbhanga in Bihar. He had contested the 2014 general elections on a BJP ticket.

Ashok Tanwar, who was once considered close to senior Congress leader Rahul Gandhi, was an MP from Sirsa during 2009-2014 and also the president of the party's Haryana unit. He quit the Congress days before the Haryana Assembly elections in October 2019. He launched his own party, Apna Bharat Morcha, in February this year

After winning the elections in West Bengal, the Trinamool Congress is also trying to make an impact on the national stage now.
