Tipu Jayanti celebrations allowed at Eidgah Ground, trouble simmering

Bengaluru: Asaduddin Owaisi's All India Majlis-e-Ittehadul Muslimeen (AIMIM) will join other outfits to celebrate the birth anniversary of Mysore ruler Tipu Sultan at the Eidgah Ground in Karnataka's Hubballi next month after a civic body granted permission to it.

The festivity will unfold against the backdrop of Sri Ram Sena's move to beat the Tipu Jayanti celebrations to it by seeking to celebrate Kanakadasa Jayanti at the ground, according to a report in NDTV.

The Eidgah Ground has long been a centre of spiraling controversy especially in August over Ganesh Chaturthi celebrations, after the Karnataka High Court allowed Ganesh Chaturthi celebrations at the ground.

This time round the Hyderabad based outfit AIMIM along with a few other outfits sought permission of the municipal corporation to celebrate Tipu Jayanti at the ground.

The civic body on Wednesday said it would accept the AIMIM's request with Mayor Veeresh Anchatgeri saying that religious activities could be done at the ground except that "no big leaders will be allowed".

Meanwhile, Karnataka Home Minister Araga Jnanendra told ANI that the matter was related to Hubli-Dharwad Mahanagara Palike and the mayor, adding that Karnataka chief minister would look in to it.

Back during the Ganesh Chaturthi row, a Muslim out questioned the municipal corporations move to give nod to the celebration saying that the Muncipal Commissioner was "trying to convert the place of worship".

Later the Supreme Court refused to stop the celebrations allowing to happen for the first time a Hindu festival at the ground.
