Srinagar: Two soldiers of Army's counter insurgency unit were wounded in an overnight operation in south Kashmir's Shopian district, official sources said.
They said security forces had launched a cordon and search operation at Check Nowgam Shopian district Wednesday evening and in the initial exchange of fire two soldiers were wounded.
The forces had an input that two militants were hiding in the village.
" Forces carried out searches of the suspected houses and also the village, but nothing was found. It seems the terrorists managed to escape in the initial gunfight," a security official said, adding the operation was called off this morning.
The injured soldiers were shifted to Srinagar's Army base hospital and their condition is stated to be critical.
This month 16 militants including seven suspected foreigners have been killed in eight gunfights across Kashmir. A policeman also lost his life in one such encounter.
