Universities warned by UGC against MPhil admissions

New Delhi: The University Grants Commission issued a warning to colleges not to provide the Master of Philosophy, or MPhil, degree and repeated on Tuesday that the programme is no longer recognised.
The authority announced that it has observed certain universities are extending invitations for admission to MPhil programmes. It stated that higher education institutions are not permitted to offer MPhil programmes under the University Grants Commission's Minimum Standards and Procedures for Award of PhD Degree rules, the Scroll.in
Consequently, it urged colleges to immediately cease accepting students into the curriculum for the 2023–2024 academic year and advised students not to enrol in MPhil programmes.
Last year, the MPhil programme was discontinued, as notified by the commission.
On November 7, 2022, the University Grants Commission instructed colleges not to provide the MPhil programme starting with the following session. It was made clear that students enrolled in MPhil programmes that began before the 2022 notification would not be impacted and could finish their studies.
The commission stated in the updated regulations that students will be eligible for a PhD study if they have completed a four-year undergraduate degree with at least 75% of the possible points, or an equivalent grade.
