Mumbai: Vehicles driving along India’s longest sea bridge in Mumbai will not have to pull over to pay toll.

Mumbai Trans Harbour Link (MTHL), which is under construction, will come with Open Road Tolling (ORT) system, meaning commuters can drive past toll booth without slowing down, according to NDTV.

The bridge, being built at the cost of ₹ 18,000 crore, will serve around 70,000 vehicles and with nearly 95% of the work, MTHL will be ready by the year-end.

SVR Srinivas, the commissioner of Mumbai Metropolitan Region Development Authority, reportedly said that the bridge alongside being an ‘engineering marvel’ is an engine of economic growth.

‘Tomorrow evening, at an event, we are going to connect the bridge to the mainland. The remaining work -- road laying, electrical, intelligent transport system (electronic tolling) -- will be done after the event. It is possible to achieve the target we set two years ago, to finish by December end this year,’ SVR Srinivas was quoted as saying.

The bridge connecting Mumbai to the mainland in 12 to 15 minutes will cut down travel time from several hours requiring now.

Beginning at Sewri, South Mumbai, the bridge cuts across Thane Creek north of Elephanta Island ending at Chirle near Nhava Sheva, connecting Mumbai with Navi Mumbai.

Planned around 30 years ago, the bridge is eventually becoming a reality in India’s financial capital.

Maharashtra Chief Minister Eknath Shinde and his deputy Devendra Fadnavis will visit to the area on Wednesday, according to the report.
