Verified clerics' roles in converting 900 people to Islam: UP ATS

Lucknow: A Month after claiming to have busted a conversion racket and arresting nine people, including two clerics, the Uttar Pradesh Anti-Terrorist Squad said the roles of clerics in converting at least 900 people have been verified.
The two clerics and others have been accused of converting around 1000 people in 23 districts to Islam offering them money, marriage, and jobs. Umar Gautam and Mufti Qazi Jehangir Qasmi, two clerics, and others have been in custody for over a month.
ATS said that list of names prepared during the integration of the accused has been verified from 27 districts and the verification has been going on in four more districts.
ATS further claimed that some of the people told that they were duped for having signed papers containing the details of their conversion. However, the Police have not yet accessed the statements of such people recorded before a magistrate.
According to the ATS, the group under the banner of Islamic Dawah Centre allegedly targeted children with disabilities, women, the unemployed, and the poor by promising them a good education, marriage, jobs, and money to have them converted to Islam.
The ATS is also investigating the funds that the IDC received through various means.
