‘We will miss you’: Chief Justice in farewell speech to Justice Shah

New Delhi: Chief Justice of India DY Chandrachud in his farewell speech to Justice MR Shah said that ‘We will miss you a lot’ quoting from Pakistan poet Obaidullah Aleem’s poem.

Justice MR Shah, whom the chief justice called ‘Tiger Shah’ demitted office as a Supreme Court judge on Monday.

Pouring his heart out, the chief justice he referred to justice Shah as ‘Tiger Shah’ for his courage and spirit for fighting.

Justice Chandrachud recalled his time working with the MR Shah, saying that Justice Shah’s entry to ‘collegium on November 9, 2022 coincided with my own appointment as chief justice.’

Justice Shah, according to Justice Chandrachud, was full of practical wisdom and excellent advices which helped greatly when they made ‘first seven appointments in a short span of time.’

Both the judges heard several cases on the same bench during the pandemic regarding oxygen supply issues, among others.

The Chief Justice recalled his meeting with Justice Shah in 1998 at the Gujarat High Court.

Justice Chandrachud had forgotten to bring his gown from Mumbai and Justice Shah arranged one from his junior.

Thanking the Bar for the farewell function, Justice Shah said he had performed his duties without fear, favour or ill-will.

‘I have played my innings very well. I have always followed my conscience. I have always believed in God and karma. I have never expected anything...I always followed the Gita,’ he was quoted as saying.
