Ludhiana, Mohali: A civilian shot a woman to death in gurdwara Dukh Niwaran Sahib in Patiala for alleged drinking inside the premises of the worshipping space. Late on Sunday, the accused shot the woman with a licensed revolver, The Indian Express reported.

SSP Varun Sharma told the media that the deceased had been identified as Parwinder Kaur, age 35. She was drinking liquor near the Sarovar (holy pond) at Gurdwara Dukh Niwaran Sahib and was carrying a bottle of alcohol. Other devotees objected to her conduct and took her to the gurudwara manager.

The accused, identified as Nirmaljit Singh Saini, opened fire at the woman when the devotees, along with the woman, gathered at the manager's office. Meanwhile, a gurudwara sewadar also got lightly injured. The woman was declared brought dead after she was brought to the Rajindra Medical College and Hospital.

The SSP said that the accused fired at the woman thrice, and she died on the spot. The sewadar, who was hit by another bullet, is under treatment at the Rajindra Medical College.

Further, the police arrested the accused, recovered the weapon used, and an FIR was filed at the Anaj Mandi police station of Patiala.

According to the SSP, the police probe has found that the woman's Aadhar card states the address of a PG accommodation, from where she had already shifted two years back.

The police found a prescription from a drug de addiction centre in the women's belongings which confirmed that she was under treatment for alcohol addiction. As per doctors' written observations, she had mood swings, depression and frequent negative thoughts. So far, none has arrived to claim her body, the SSP added.
