Islamabad: At least seven people were killed and 40 others injured in a stampede in a political gathering in Pakistan's eastern city of Multan Friday night, hospital sources said.

Pervez, director for emergency services in Nishtar Hospital, said that the victims died of suffocation, according to Xinhua.

Media reports said the political gathering was organised by Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI), a main opposition party in the country.

Talking to the media, PTI spokesperson Shireen Mazari said the incident happened after party chairman Imran Khan left the venue.

The stampede erupted when people were leaving from one of the three gates after attending the political rally, according to media reports.

The injured people have been shifted to Nishtar Hospital in Multan where at least four of them were in critical condition, hospital sources said.

Chief Minister Shahbaz Sharif expressed sorrow over the incident and directed hospital administration to provide best possible medical treatment to the injured people.
