Cairo:Egypt's first democratically elected President Mohammed Morsi has died following a session in court, a state-run television station and newspaper reported on Monday.

Morsi, 67, fell into a coma after attending a session in his trial over charges of espionage, according to al-Ahram newspaper.

Morsi was democratically elected in 2012 after the 2011 Arab Spring saw the end of President Hosni Mubarak's three decade long rule. He was then deposed following a military coup in July 2013.

He served just one year of a four-year term, while the organisation to which he belonged, the Muslim Brotherhood, has since been banned.
