Thiruvananthapuram: Olympian P T Usha has agreed a request from Prime Minister Narendra Modi seeking to help the Sports Authority of Gujarat by offering her expertise in identifying and training budding athletes in Gujarat.

Usha, nicknamed the Payyoli Express after the Kerala village where she was born, said the invite from Modi came last year when he was Gujarat's chief minister.

"They wanted to replicate the model we follow at the Usha School which is to identify talent at a young age and give them specialized training. I have agreed to support their endeavour," she said.

The Sports Authority of Gujarat has promised her a free hand in setting up and running the residential sports academy and in establishing training facilities at the Vadodara sports complex.

Govt will look into matter: Thiruvanchoor

Amid reports that Usha is planning to shift her Athletic school from Kerala to Gujarat, State Sports Minister Thiruvanchoor Radhakrishnan said the State government would intervene into the matter.

“The government has given all the facilities to the USHA School. We are ready to solve if they have any issues in the state,” the Minister told Madhyamam online.

“I came to know this through the media reports. We will intervene into the matter,” he said.
