Thalassery: The Additional Magistrate Court here sentenced Muhammed Afsal, the accused person in the Shafana murder case, to life imprisonment on Thursday.

The court also awarded the 34-year-old a fine of RS 50,000.

Shafna, 18, a student of Christ College, Thalassery, and daughter of P K Sammooty and Jameela of KTP Mukku, Chirakkara, was murdered on January 13, 2004, by Afsal of Thoufeeq Manzil, Chirakkara, after she refused his love proposal.

On the fateful day, Afsal followed Shafna to her home after her classes and brutally murdered her in front her mother in the compound of her house.

Afsal was arrested by the police the very next day.

He obtained bail from the court during trial at the Thalassery Court and secured a fake passport in the name of one Taj Pasha, son of Abdul Khan and reached Kuwait. There he secured a job with the help of some relatives.

Afsal’s evasion from the hands of the law came to an end after eight years of stay in Kuwait when his sponsor realised that he was on the lookout by Interpol.

The Interpol arrested him on September 18 last year and handed over to the Kerala police.
