Thiruvananthapuram: Chief Minister Oommen Chandy Wednesday refrained from making any comments on the decision to set up a Chancellors Council taken at a meeting of Vice Chancellors of Universities.

"No comment", was his quick reply during cabinet briefing when reporters asked about the meeting of Vice-Chancellors, convened by Governor P Sathasivam, in his capacity as University Chancellor at Kochi on October 27.

Universities in the state were functioning systematically and its results can be seen in the higher education sector, he said.

However, there were issues connected with Calicut University and government viewed the matter seriously. Government had convened a meeting and informed the authorities concerned about its stand on the issues, he said.

Universties should function for the betterment of students whose future depend on the functioning of Universities, Chandy said.

"Persons in top posts with responsibilities in Universities should act in accordance with the dignity of the post they held," Chandy pointed out.

The meeting was called by the Governor in the wake of various issues faced by universities, especially Calicut University, the administration of which has come to a standstill due to strikes and agitation by a section of teachers and students on various issues.
