Thrissur: A police officer, who has been accused of picking up a 14-year-old school student in a theft case and subjecting him to brutal torture, has been suspended from service.

City Police Commissioner Jacob Jobe on Saturday suspended Haridas, Assistant Sub-Inspector (ASI) of Thrissur East police station, from active duty as an investigation is completed.

The boy, Nikhil, a resident of Thoppuparambu near Viyyur and a class nine student at the CMS School here, was mistakenly picked up in a handbag theft case by Haridas while he was not on duty.

The incident happened on Wednesday evening when Nikhil was attending a cultural event in a temple near here. When a woman raised a complaint that her bag had been stolen, the ASI, a neighbour of the woman, abused and tortured the boy in a bid to make him admit to the crime. The police released the student with an order that he would have to appear whenever he was called.

However, the bag was recovered from the woman’s residence on Thursday morning.

The victim’s parents later took him to Thrissur General Hospital and later filed a complaint with high officials.

The Child Welfare Commission has asked the city Police Commissioner to submit a report over the incident within a week.
