Thiruvananthapuram: Amid colourful rituals, 'Vishu', the Malayalam new year was celebrated in the state with traditional fervour and gaiety Wednesday.

The festive occasion falls in the month of 'Medam', and people look ahead to a year of plenty and prosperity.

The day began with Malayalees observing the ritual of 'vishukanni' in which seasonal fruits, vegetables, yellow flowers (Konna), rice, gold, clothes, coins and holy texts are arranged on a platter in front of deity and is the first sight of people when they wake up on Vishu day.

Elders also follow the practise of 'Vishukkaineetam' (giving money to youngsters).

Children burst crackers and a grand 'sadya' (feast) is arranged in the afternoon.

Temples, including the Lord Krishna's at Guruvayur and Lord Ayyappa's at Sabarimala in the state witnessed a heavy rush of pilgrims since the morning.

Kerala Governor Justice P Sathasivam and Chief Minister Oommen Chandy greeted people on the festive occasion.
