Attempt to derail train in Kottayam

Kottayam: Panic spread among train travelers on Friday as a miscreant was found riding a motorcycle along the railway tracks and fleeing leaving the bike in-between the tracks seeing a train coming his way.

The incident happened Thursday night near Poovanthuruth-Madambukadu area between Kottayam and Changanassery.

Malabar Express, en route to Mangalore from Thiruvananthapuram, hit the motorbike and dragged it through the tracks for some distance before stopping. The incident damaged the security locks of the track.

The locals said they had seen a person riding the bike with the headlight on along the tracks for almost one kilometer. He fled the scene soon after the incident. The number plate of the bike also could not be recovered as nothing but the debris remained after the incident.

The officials are suspecting a sabotage attempt behind the incident as the car of a railway official, who reached the spot after being informed, was damaged by unknown persons.

A similar attempt was also made aiming the Amrita Express on the way to Thiruvananthapuram where unidentified men put iron rods and abandoned electronic devices on the tracks.
