Thiruvananthapuram: The third year civil engineering student of College of Engineering, Trivandrum (CET), who suffered serious head injuries after being hit by a jeep driven by another student of the same college on Wednesday evening, succumbed to her injuries late on Thursday night.

21-year old Thanzi Basheer, hailing from Vazhikadavu in Malappuram, was returning to the hostel amid Onam celebrations on the campus when the incident occurred.

Thanzi, daughter of Kunnath Pullaanchery veetil Basheer, suffered fatal head injuries in the accident and was admitted to a private hospital here. Although she had undergone three surgeries before being out on ventilator support, her life could not be saved.

The jeep, carrying around 10 students, was driven by Baiju, a fourth year mechanical student, hailing from Kannur. He has been booked for culpable homicide not amounting to murder.

The victim’s family alleged that the students were in an inebriated state.

College principal Dr David said that some twelve students have been suspended in connection with the incident. He said the Onam celebration was held with the permission of the authority.

The police have registered a case against those who were in the jeep at the time of the accident. The police team, led by Control Room CI Prasad, has initiated a probe into the incident.
